Nikolaos Mantzaros was deeply shaped by the Italian, and especially Neapolitan, musical tradition. This influence is clearly audible in this work, whose sparkling, overture-like character often recalls the operatic world of Gioachino Rossini. Mantzaros is best known today for his musical setting of Dionysios Solomos’s Hymn to Freedom, whose opening verses became the Greek National Anthem.
